LAGRANT Foundation Graduate Scholarships

The LAGRANT Foundation (TLF) will award 40 scholarships of $3,250 to ethnically diverse minority graduate students in 2018. Students must be attending accredited institutions in the U.S. and focusing on the fields of advertising, marketing or public relations.

Scholarship recipients will receive a trip to New York or San Francisco where they will participate in career building activities, including a welcome dinner, career and professional development workshops, and a scholarship reception.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident or be an AB-540 student/DACA recipient
• Must be a member of one of the following ethnic groups: African American/Black, Asian American/Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino or Native American/Alaska Native
• Must be a full-time student at an accredited institution within the U.S.
• Must have a minimum of 3.2 GPA
• Must pursue a field of study that has an emphasis in advertising, marketing or public relations
• Must have a minimum of two academic semesters or one year left to complete his/her Master’s degree from the time the scholarship is awarded in May 2018
• If chosen, the applicant must attend TLF’s scholarship activities to receive the scholarship. The applicant must make a one-year commitment to maintain contact with TLF to receive professional guidance and academic support.

Smithsonian Environmental Research Center Internship Program – Summer Projects

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center’s (SERC) Internship Program offers undergraduate and beginning graduate students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fields of environmental research and public engagement. This program enables students to work on independent research projects under the direction of a SERC mentor.

Intern projects span the range of research conducted at SERC, including environmental chemistry, marine and esturaine ecology, molecular ecology, and terrestrial ecology. Projects are also offered in public engagement, with opportunities in environmental education, citizen science, and science writing. Although students will become familiar with much of the research of SERC in general, individuals will devote most of their time to an independent research project. Students will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge in a selected field of study and to learn a variety of research techniques through firsthand experience. At the conclusion of the internship, student participants will be expected to present the findings of their independent projects in a formal seminar to the SERC community.

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center will consider applications from currently enrolled undergraduate and Master’s students, or students who have recently graduated from undergraduate or Master’s programs. Applicants must be in a position to commit fully to the completion of a project. U.S. citizenship is not a requirement to participate in this program.

Selected candidates will receive a stipend of $500.00 per week. There is limited on-site dormitory space available for $105.00 per week. SERC does not supply board, but the dorms are equipped with full kitchens. We can accommodate up to 24 residents.

Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program

The Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program is a distinguished transatlantic initiative that offers a select cohort of accomplished Americans the opportunity to complete a comprehensive intercultural professional program in Germany. Bosch Fellows act as consultants in their field of expertise at leading public or private institutions in Germany. In addition, they participate in professional seminars, where they travel to meet and exchange ideas with experts and decision makers from Germany and Europe.

Prior to their work placements and seminars, Bosch Fellows receive private tutoring prior to their departure for Germany and participate in 8 weeks of intensive language courses in Berlin. Fellows are from the fields of public policy and administration, foreign and security policy, urban and regional planning, business, journalism and communications, law, or cultural and arts management (ex. museum, theater, orchestra).

Eligibility

Candidates for the Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program must meet the following requirements:

• U.S. citizen
• 40 years of age or younger at the application deadline
• Minimum five years of relevant, full-time work experience in target fellowship field (excluding internships)
• Graduate degree preferred
• Evidence of outstanding professional performance
• Sincere commitment to furthering the transatlantic relationship

UW Gatzert Child Welfare Fellowship

Nomination Deadline:  March 31, 2017

The Gatzert Child Welfare fellowship was established in the 1930s by the Bailey and Babette Gatzert foundation for Child Welfare. In accordance with the donor’s wishes, the funds are to be used to promote education for “the better care and treatment of children suffering from defects, either physically or mentally.” The one-quarter fellowship will be awarded to support the writing of a doctoral dissertation in the field of child development with special reference to children with disabilities.

Eligibility

• Candidate must have achieved doctoral candidate status at the time of nomination
• Candidate must have demonstrated progress on the dissertation which indicates completion by the end of Summer Quarter 2018 or sooner.
• Candidate may not have received another dissertation writing award from the Graduate School (e.g., GO-MAP, Presidential Dissertation, etc.)
• Students in fee-based programs are not eligible.

Award

• The awards provide a stipend equivalent to the stipend of a standard Predoc TA II (currently $2,572 month), GAIP insurance, and UW state tuition and fees (excluding U-PASS and International Student Fee) up to 18 credits.

Islamic Scholarship Fund

The mission of the Islamic Scholarship Fund (ISF) is to increase American Muslim representation in media, politics and government. For the last 8 years, ISF has awarded 221 scholarships and grants. In 2016, it awarded $183,500 divided across 58 awards.

Eligible applicants are:

• Muslim or active members of the Muslim community
• Enrolled at an accredited university in the U.S. by August 2017 in either an undergraduate (junior/senior) or graduate program

Summer 2016+ RA Position in the Institute for Health Metrics & Evaluation

The UW Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation is seeking an RA for Infectious Disease Surveillance. This position will average 20 hours per week.

The RA position involves two separate but related projects. The first project is focused on the integration of novel data streams (e.g., Internet News sources, and social media data) with environmental and epidemiological data for infectious disease surveillance and forecasting. The objectives of the project are to develop an automated process for acquiring, processing and filtering data for modeling. Once we gather these data, we will develop temporal models for the dynamical assessment of the relationship between the various data variables and infectious disease incidence. Finally, we will assess these modeling approaches for forecasting the dynamics of select infectious diseases.

The second project is focused on integrating data from social media, blogs, local news sources, restaurant and food service review sites to augment traditional approaches to foodborne disease surveillance. An approximately 48 million people experience foodborne illness in the United States each year, however, only a small proportion of cases are captured by traditional surveillance systems. This is mainly due to a limited number of affected persons seeking medical care and reporting symptoms to appropriate authorities. We therefore aim to supplement existing surveillance systems by developing a validated system for monitoring reports of foodborne illness using event-based digital disease surveillance data sources, and characterize and estimate the extent of foodborne illness and disease outbreaks in the United States.

Duties include:

• Perform data analyses using statistical and machine-learning methods
• Visualize results for presentations and publications
• Aid in drafting manuscripts for journal publications
• Participate in other research activities as needed by the project

Requirements :

• Currently enrolled graduate student at the University of Washington during AY 15/16
• Experience with machine-learning and statistical methods for data analyses
• Interest in public health
• Ability to work independently
• Very strong analytic, creative, and writing skills
• Proficiency in natural language processing is a plus

Desired qualification:

• Proficiency in R or Python

Laura W. Bush/UNESCO Travelling Fellowship

Application deadline:   February 22, 2016   (for summer travel)

The Laura W. Bush/UNESCO Travelling Fellowship will help fund a proposal designed by the applicant to conduct brief work in a foreign country related to the mandate of UNESCO – using education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, and/or communication and information to build strong ties among nations.

The fellowship is intended for American college/university students who express an interest in international collaboration but as of yet had not been afforded many opportunities to travel abroad.

The length of time for the travel is expected to be between 4 and 6 weeks and should include interaction with individuals from other nations. During his/her travel, the recipient should be willing to participate in public diplomacy events arranged with the pertinent U.S. State Department Consulate, Mission, and/or Embassy.

Following the travel, the recipient agrees to submit a report describing experiences and analyzing objectives achieved; share his/her experiences with others; and be available to make a presentation to the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO.

Eligibility
In order to apply for the Laura W. Bush Traveling Fellowship, applicants:

• Must be a U.S. Citizen eligible for foreign travel
• Must be at least 18 years old and not older than 25 at the time of application
• Must be currently enrolled in an accredited U.S. college or university in the United States

Selection
Only complete applications received by the application deadline will be considered. A subcommittee of the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO, which shall include a personal representative of Mrs. Laura W. Bush, will conduct an initial review of the applications, conduct phone interviews as needed, and provide recommendations to the entire Commission about which candidates are the most qualified to receive the Fellowship. The number of recipients and exact amount of money awarded will depend on the quality of applications and the funds available. The average fellowship award amount is $2,500.

• Quality of essay
• Apparent dedication to bridging nations, enlarging freedoms, and promoting democracy through one or more of UNESCO’s fields of competence
• Performance during interview, if applicable
