Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research Program

The Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) program has provided undergraduate and graduate students with valuable educational experiences since 1922. By encouraging close working relationships between students and mentors, the program promotes scientific excellence and achievement through hands-on learning.

The program awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering. Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision related research. Students use the funding to pay for travel expenses to and from a research site, or for purchase of non-standard laboratory equipment necessary to complete a specific research project.

While membership in Sigma Xi is not a requirement for applying for funding from the Grants-in-Aid of Research program, approximately 75% of funds are restricted for use by dues paying student members of Sigma Xi or students whose project advisor is a dues paying member of Sigma Xi. Students from any country are eligible to receive funding.

Dan David Prize Scholarships

Application Deadline:  March 10, 2018

The Dan David Prize awards scholarships to doctoral and post-doctoral researchers carrying out research in one of the selected fields for the current year. Registered doctoral and post-doctoral researchers who study at recognized universities throughout the world, and whose research has been approved, are eligible to apply.

The Dan David Prize laureates annually donate twenty scholarships of US$15,000 each to outstanding doctoral and postdoctoral students of exceptional promise in the chosen fields for the current year. Ten scholarships are awarded to doctoral and post-doctoral students at universities throughout the world and ten scholarships at Tel Aviv University.

The fields for 2018 are:

• Past: History of Science
• Present: Bioethics
• Future: Personalized Medicine

The Dan David Prize scholarships are granted according to merit, without discrimination based on gender, race, religion, nationality, or political affiliation.

Kobe College Corporation – Japan Education Exchange Graduate Fellowship

Application Deadline:  March 1, 2018

The KCC Japan Education Exchange Graduate Fellowships Program was established in 1996 to support qualified PhD graduate students for research or study in Japan. The purpose of the fellowship is to support future American educators who will teach more effectively about Japan. One fellowship of $30,000 will be awarded.

KCC Japan Education Exchange will award the graduate fellowship to a graduate student who has a record of effectively supporting education and awareness about Japan, or who shows promise to do so in the future. There are no restrictions as to place of study in Japan, discipline of study, or age of the applicant. Preference will be given to applicants who have documented interest in Japanese studies, which includes (but is not limited to) the arts, culture, education, language, history, journalism, business or science. Preference will be given to applicants who provide written confirmation of their research or study site in Japan. Preference will also be given to applicants who have not yet conducted dissertation research in Japan. Applicants must have completed their qualifying examinations and advanced to candidacy; they must also demonstrate research level Japanese language competency.

L’Oréal USA For Women in Science Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

The L’Oréal USA For Women in Science fellowship program awards five women postdoctoral scientists annually with grants of $60,000 each for their contributions in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields and commitment to serving as role models for younger generations. The program is the U.S. component of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science International Fellowships. Celebrating its fourteenth year in the U.S., the For Women in Science program has awarded 70 postdoctoral women scientists over $3.5 million in grants.

Eligibility:

• Must have a conferred PhD and have started in a postdoctoral research position by February 2, 2018
• Must maintain the status of postdoctoral researcher throughout the fellowship year
• Must be American born, naturalized citizen or permanent resident
• Must be affiliated with a U.S. based academic or research institution
• Must plan to conduct their postdoctoral studies and research in the U.S.
• Must be involved in basic research in the life and physical/material sciences, engineering & technology, computer science and mathematics
• Cannot be in a faculty position
• Must commit to at least twenty hours of activity in support of women and girls in science (e.g. mentoring, classroom visits, media, events)
• Must be available the week of October 22, 2018 for the For Women in Science Awards Week

NRC Research Associateship Programs (RAP) Awards

The National Academies’ NRC Research Associateship Program promotes excellence in scientific and technological research conducted by the U.S. government through the administration of programs offering graduate, postdoctoral, and senior level research opportunities at sponsoring federal laboratories and affiliated institutions.

Competitive awards are available for scientists and engineers to conduct independent research in federal laboratories and affiliated institutions. Awards include attractive stipends, health insurance, professional travel and relocation. Awards are available for scientists and engineers at all stages of their career. Applicants should hold, or anticipate receiving, an earned doctorate in science or engineering. Degrees from universities abroad should be equivalent in training and research experience to a degree from a U.S. institution. Many awards are open to foreign nationals as well as to U.S. citizens.

Mazamas Graduate Student Research Grants

The Mazamas, a mountaineering organization based in Portland, Oregon, is dedicated to the exploration and preservation of mountain environments in the Pacific Northwest.  Mazamas activities include gathering and disseminating scientific information concerning the natural features of mountains, forests, rivers, and lakes.

The Mazamas Research Committee annually awards research grants for scientific studies promoting wilderness ecology, mountain travel, and safety in the outdoors. Investigations of geologic features, biotic communities, and human endeavors pertaining to the enjoyment and safety of outdoor recreation are all relevant research topics. The maximum award in the graduate student category is $2,000.

CAORC Multi-Country Research Fellowship

The Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) Multi-Country Research Fellowship supports advanced regional or trans-regional research in the humanities, social sciences, or allied natural sciences for U.S. doctoral candidates, and postdoctoral scholars. Preference will be given to candidates examining comparative and/or cross-regional research. Applicants are eligible to apply as individuals or in teams. Scholars must carry out research in two or more countries outside the United States, at least one of which hosts a participating American overseas research center.

Basic Eligibility

• Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
• Ph.D. candidates must be ABD (all but dissertation) by May 2018.
• It is not required that you be affiliated with a U.S. academic institution to apply. As long as you are a Ph.D. candidate at an accredited university, or have already earned your Ph.D., you are eligible for the fellowships.
• Group projects are admissible and will be evaluated as a single application

Award Details

• Fellowship awards will not exceed $10,500.
• Funding is not available for research conducted in the United States.
• Travel is currently restricted by the U.S. Department of State to the following AORC countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Iraq, Pakistan, and Yemen. CAORC abides by all State Department travel restrictions.

Graduate Women in Science National Fellowships Program

The GWIS National Fellowships Program is proud to offer fellowships in 2017 to help increase knowledge in the natural sciences and to encourage research careers in the sciences by women. Endowment funds, mostly generated from bequests, provide the annual income that supports scientific research done by GWIS award winners.

Fellowship funds, which may be awarded in amounts up to $10,000, may be used for such things as:

• expendable supplies
• small equipment to be used by the recipient (not for general use)
• publication of research findings
• travel and subsistence while performing field studies
• travel to another laboratory for collaborative research

Eligibility:

• Awards will be made to women holding a degree from a recognized institution of higher learning, of outstanding ability and promise in research, who are performing hypothesis-driven research at any institution in the U.S. or abroad.
• Career level (e.g. graduate student vs. assistant professor) of the candidate will be taken into consideration when reviewing the proposals.
• Awards will be made irrespective of race, religion, nationality, creed, national origin, sexual orientation, or age.
• Application for the GWIS Fellowships is offered at no cost to current GWIS members, as a member benefit. For non-members, an application processing fee of $50 is required. Fellowships applicants that are not already GWIS members may join GWIS with a 6-month introductory membership at a discounted rate of $35. Please note that membership approval can take up to 48 hours, so if you want to become a GWIS member, please do so (ideally) at least a week before the Fellowships deadline.
• Financial need of research funding is a requirement for the application. No project that has already been fully funded will be eligible for the awards. All pending funding sources must be listed in the application and reviewers will consider these when assessing the financial need of the project.

Smithsonian Environmental Research Center Internship Program – Winter/Spring Projects

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center’s (SERC) Internship Program offers undergraduate and beginning graduate students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fields of environmental research and public engagement. This program enables students to work on independent research projects under the direction of a SERC mentor.

Intern projects span the range of research conducted at SERC, including environmental chemistry, marine and esturaine ecology, molecular ecology, and terrestrial ecology. Projects are also offered in public engagement, with opportunities in environmental education, citizen science, and science writing. Although students will become familiar with much of the research of SERC in general, individuals will devote most of their time to an independent research project. Students will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge in a selected field of study and to learn a variety of research techniques through firsthand experience. At the conclusion of the internship, student participants will be expected to present the findings of their independent projects in a formal seminar to the SERC community.

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center will consider applications from currently enrolled undergraduate and Master’s students, or students who have recently graduated from undergraduate or Master’s programs. Applicants must be in a position to commit fully to the completion of a project. U.S. citizenship is not a requirement to participate in this program.

Selected candidates will receive a stipend of $500.00 per week. There is limited on-site dormitory space available for $105.00 per week. SERC does not supply board, but the dorms are equipped with full kitchens. We can accommodate up to 24 residents.

National Geographic Early Career Grant

Application Deadline:  October 25, 2017

The National Geographic Society awards grants for conservation, education, research, storytelling, and technology through its Committee for Research and Exploration. All proposed projects must be novel and exploratory, and be of broad interest. National Geographic Society grant-funded projects should be bold, innovative, and transformative.

National Geographic welcomes applications from around the world, and specifically encourages applicants from outside the United States to apply. Applicants planning to work outside of their home country should include at least one local collaborator on their team. The Committee will not usually consider applications that support strictly laboratory or collections work. Grants are awarded on the basis of merit and exist independent of the Society’s other divisions.

Early Career Grant applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of application submission. Applicants must not yet hold a Ph.D., an equivalent degree, or equivalent work experience to qualify for an Early Career Grant.
