UW Gatzert Child Welfare Fellowship

Nomination Deadline:  March 31, 2017

The Gatzert Child Welfare fellowship was established in the 1930s by the Bailey and Babette Gatzert foundation for Child Welfare. In accordance with the donor’s wishes, the funds are to be used to promote education for “the better care and treatment of children suffering from defects, either physically or mentally.” The one-quarter fellowship will be awarded to support the writing of a doctoral dissertation in the field of child development with special reference to children with disabilities.

Eligibility

  • Candidate must have achieved doctoral candidate status at the time of nomination
  • Candidate must have demonstrated progress on the dissertation which indicates completion by the end of Summer Quarter 2018 or sooner.
  • Candidate may not have received another dissertation writing award from the Graduate School (e.g., GO-MAP, Presidential Dissertation, etc.)
  • Students in fee-based programs are not eligible.

Award

  • The awards provide a stipend equivalent to the stipend of a standard Predoc TA II (currently $2,572 month), GAIP insurance, and UW state tuition and fees (excluding U-PASS and International Student Fee) up to 18 credits.

Indian Health Service Scholarship Program

Application Deadline:  March 28, 2017

The IHS Scholarship Program provides scholarship support to American Indian and Alaska Native students to pursue health profession careers and to place health care professionals within medically underserved Indian health programs throughout the continental United States and Alaska. The scholarship program provides financial support, including tuition, required fees, and living expenses, in exchange for a minimum two-year service commitment within an Indian health program in your chosen health professional discipline.

Applicants must 1) be US citizens or US nationals, 2) must be members or descendants of a federally recognized, state-recognized or terminated American Indian Tribe or Alaska Native village, and 3) be enrolled in a health professions degree program.

  • Have completed all non-dissertation requirements for their doctoral degree by the time of submission of the application, including completion of their qualifying exams. AHRQ Health Services Research Dissertation Grant

The overall goal of the AHRQ Health Services Research Dissertation Grant Program is to help ensure that a diverse pool of highly trained health services researchers is available in adequate numbers and appropriate research areas to address the research mission and priorities of AHRQ.  9-17 month awards are up to $40,000.

Applications for dissertation research grants must be responsive to AHRQ’s mission, which is to improve the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care for all Americans.  The research sponsored and conducted by the Agency develops and presents scientific evidence regarding all aspects of health care in the United States.  It addresses issues of organization, delivery, financing, utilization, patient and provider behavior, outcomes, effectiveness and cost.  It evaluates both clinical services and the system in which these services are provided.  These scientific results improve the evidence base to enable better decisions about health care, including such areas as disease prevention, appropriate use of medical technologies, improving diagnosis and treatment in cost-effective ways, long-term care, and reducing racial and ethnic disparities.

AHRQ has identified strategic goals as priority research areas.  Applied research applications must address one of these areas.  Applicants are strongly encouraged to focus on topical areas unique to AHRQ, demonstrating how expected results can be used or made available for use to enhance healthcare quality.  Results should be directly relevant to customers, such as providers and practitioners, administrators, payers, consumers, policymakers, and insurers.  The strategic research goals are:

  • Safety/quality – Reduce the risk of harm from health care services by promoting the delivery of appropriate care that achieves the best quality outcomes
  • Efficiency – Achieve wider access to effective health care services and reduce health care costs
  • Effectiveness – Assure that providers and consumers/patients use beneficial and timely health care information to make informed decision choices.

Candidates are required to address health services research issues critical to AHRQ priority populations, including: individuals living in inner city and rural (including frontier) areas; low-income and minority groups; women, children, the elderly; and individuals with special health care needs, including those with disabilities and those who need chronic or end-of-life health care.

Candidates must conduct dissertation projects which focus on health care delivery in the United States. AHRQ will not accept international health care research projects.

  • Candidates must be full-time students in good standing, who are enrolled in an accredited research doctoral program in such fields as the social or behavioral sciences, mathematics, engineering, health services research, nursing, social sciences, epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy, and health informatics.
  • Candidates with more than part-time employment (defined as greater than twenty hours per week), in addition to the requirements of their current, full-time academic student appointments, are not eligible to apply for this grant mechanism.
  • Students must complete all non-dissertation requirements for their doctoral degree by the time of submission of the application (except in cases where a clinical internship is required to follow the dissertation phase).  Approval of the dissertation proposal by the doctoral committee is required before the grant award is issued.

Tylenol Future Care Scholarship

Each year the makers of TYLENOL® award annual scholarships to well deserving students pursuing careers in healthcare at accredited, nonprofit two or four-year colleges/universities in the United States.

Scholarships are available to graduate students in public health/health education, medical school, nursing and/or pharmacy degree programs. Students must have one or more years of school remaining; students who will be beginning their degree in fall 2016 are eligible to apply. Applicants must be a resident of the U.S. or Puerto Rico.

The selection committee will base their decisions on college GPA, academic records (in public health/health education, medical school, nursing, and/or pharmacy), community involvement/volunteer service, and essay content.

Scholarships ranging from $500 to $10,000 will be awarded and are not renewable. Scholarships will be applied to tuition, fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for course load.

UW Institute of Translational Health Sciences Summer Clinical Research Training Program

The ITHS TL1 Clinical Research Training Program is now accepting applications for its three month summer program for pre-doctoral students. In-depth training meets team science in this immersive summer program for those looking to broaden their horizons and launch their research ideas into actual application.

Applicants are encouraged from all University of Washington health sciences and related schools, including Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Social Work, as well as health-related programs in the School of Engineering and College of Arts and Sciences.

The Summer TL1 program offers three months of dedicated mentorship and an immersive training experience to students seeking a practical research introduction to clinical and translational research.

Other benefits include:

  • Core curriculum and mentored training from experienced researchers
  • Pre-doctoral monthly stipend of $1,910 and payment of tuition for the two-credit class
  • Project expenses
  • Twelve (12) applicants will be admitted to the 2016 summer cohort

Eligibility:

At the time of appointment to the training program, individuals selected to participate in the training program must be citizens or non-citizen nationals of the United States, or have been lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence and have in their possession an Alien Registration Receipt Card (I-151 or I-551) or other legal verification of admission for permanent residence. Non-citizen nationals are persons born in lands that are not States but are under U.S. sovereignty, jurisdiction, or administration (e.g., American Samoa). Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible.

Fall 2015 TA Position in the School of Nursing

Application deadline:   July 17, 2015  (5:00 pm)

A Teaching Assistant is needed to provide support for NURS 301: Clinically Oriented Anatomy and Physiology. This course takes a systems level approach to human anatomy and physiology, both normal and pathological. Lectures are held on Wednesday 4:00-4:50 and every other Friday 10:30-12:30; case studies are discussed during the following hour (12:30-1:30). On alternate Fridays students attend gross anatomy lab (10:30-2:30).

Roles and Responsibilities of the TA:  The Teaching Assistant will work with the instructor to provide assistance. Specific tasks include:

    • Grading homework (weekly short answer problem sets)
    • Posting homework grades to Canvas Gradebook
    • Assist in gross anatomy lab
    • Help grade anatomy worksheets
    • Help construct and revise exams and quizzes
    • Other duties as needed

Qualifications

  • Graduate student in a Health Sciences program
  • Familiarity with Canvas and with Excel
  • Experience with gross anatomy
  • Teaching experience
  • Clinical experience highly desirable

Tuition waivers/coverage for 50% FTE ASE appointments (per UW School of Nursing SAS Memorandum 35):

  • Tuition-based students who are hired as ASEs (TAs/RAs/SAs) in the UW School of Nursing, receive a resident operating and tech fee waiver, and a waiver of the non-resident differential, if any, in the amount of the current tuition. This is the standard university practice.
  • Fee-based students who are hired as ASEs (TAs/RAs/SAs) in the UW School of Nursing receive course payments equal to Tier 1 graduate resident operating and tech fee, plus remaining related program-specific fees. 2015-2016 GSA Position (Program Evaluation) in the School of Nursing

Under the supervision of the Associate Dean for Academic Services and in collaboration with the Chair of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Coordinating Committee and Director of Admissions & Multicultural Student Affairs, provide data support for the BSN program, and Accelerated BSN program, and at the UW School of Nursing.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • BSN, ABSN, and PhD Admissions: Enter, analyze, and report BSN & ABSN application review scores. Analyze and report PhD application review scores. Provide data to staff and members of the admissions committee for use during admissions.
  • Collect, analyze, and report data on BSN & ABSN student evaluation and the BSN & ABSN program, including development and testing of program evaluation questionnaires and preparation of annual written reports of both BSN and ABSN program evaluation data.
  • Evaluate current BSN & ABSN students: Collect and analyze data on student satisfaction, favorite courses, courses needing change, outcome achievement, issues, suggestions, and employment status online (WebQ) at two times during the BSN program. Surveying junior students, and senior students – and twice during the ABSN program, during the first and the last summer quarter. Report results to BSNCC and provide feedback to the students surveyed.
  • Evaluate BSN & ABSN Alumni: Follow up with BSN & ABSN graduates one year after graduation to evaluate the extent that the BSN & ABSN program prepared students in each of the program goal and to obtain suggestions for the program.

Qualifications:

  • Have some knowledge of instrument development and testing, quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
  • Computer skills including MS WORD, EXCEL, and SPSS, and online survey (web-based tools, especially WebQ).
  • Self-motivated and organized with good interpersonal skills.
  • Must be a graduate student in good standing.

Duration: ASE appointment from September 1, 2015 – June 15, 2016, with training as an hourly appointment from June 17, 2015 – June 30, 2015. Exact dates and hours of employment will be arranged between the SA and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, with the potential for reappointment the remaining academic year (fall 2016 – spring 2017) based on available funding and job evaluation. Performance of duties will be evaluated at the end of summer quarter and then annually by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in collaboration with the Chair of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Coordinating Committee.
