CRA-W Scholarships for Women Studying Information Security

Each year in co-sponsorship with Applied Computer Security Associates (ACSA) and the Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE), the Computing Research Association-Women (CRA-W) presents the Scholarship for Women Studying Information Security (SWSIS) to 10-15 women in their undergraduate or Master’s studies.

Women studying information security may apply for consideration to receive the scholarship for their third or fourth year of undergraduate studies, or for a Masters’ program. To be eligible, you must be accepted at or enrolled in a US campus of a US university. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents.

Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship Program

The Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) provides outstanding benefits and opportunities to students pursuing doctoral degrees in fields that use high-performance computing to solve complex science and engineering problems. Computational science is interdisciplinary by nature, using algorithms, mathematics and computers to analyze and solve scientific and engineering problems. The DOE CSGF’s unusual program of study helps nurture this crosscutting foundation. The result: scientists who may reside in science, mathematics, engineering or computer science departments but share an interest in research using computing and mathematical methods.

Eligibility

The DOE CSGF is open to U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens who plan full-time, uninterrupted study toward a Ph.D. at an accredited U.S. university. We encourage applications from students in engineering and the physical, computer, mathematical or life sciences. The fellowship provides four years of support, but must be renewed each summer. At the time of application, applicants must be undergraduate seniors, applicants with no more than B.S. or B.A. degrees who are not enrolled in graduate school, or first-year graduate students (M.S. degree or Ph.D. students without an M.S. degree)

During the fellowship period, fellows are required to be enrolled as full-time graduate students at an accredited U.S. college or university and conduct research in areas of interest to the DOE. The summer should be spent conducting full-time research related to the completion of one’s degree program, enrolled in classes or on a practicum assignment.

Benefits

• A yearly stipend of $36,000
• Payment of full tuition and required fees during the appointment period (at any accredited U.S. university)
• A $5,000 academic allowance in the first fellowship year and a $1,000 allowance each renewed year (to be used for the purchase of a computer workstation or for research/professional development expenses)
• Up to four years of total support, depending on renewal
• A twelve-week practicum experience at one of 21 DOE national laboratories or sites, including access to DOE supercomputers
• A rigorous program of study that ensures fellows have solid backgrounds in a scientific or engineering discipline plus computer science and applied mathematics
• An annual program review for fellows, alumni, university and DOE laboratory staff, held each summer in the Washington, D.C. area

American Association of University Women (AAUW) Selected Professions Fellowships

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is the nation’s leading voice promoting equity and education for women and girls. Since it founding in 1881, AAUW members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day — educational, social, economic, and political.

Selected Professions Fellowships are awarded to women who intend to pursue a full-time course of study at accredited U.S. institutions during the fellowship year in one of the designated degree programs where women’s participation traditionally has been low.

Selected Professions Fellowships are awarded for the following master’s programs:

• Architecture
• Computer/information sciences
• Engineering
• Mathematics/statistics

Fellowships in the following degree programs are restricted to women of color, who have been underrepresented in these fields:

• Master’s in business administration — applicants may apply for second year of study only
• Law — applicants may apply for third year of study only
• Doctorate in medicine — applicants may apply for third or fourth year of study only

Applicants must be women who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States who have achieved high standards of academic excellence and show promise of distinction in their respective fields. Applicants must be full-time students at an accredited U.S. institution during the fellowship year, and should be pursuing a course of study in the United States over the full academic year. Priority is given to women who do not already hold a master’s or first professional degree.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships

As a means of increasing the number of U.S. citizens and nationals trained in science and engineering disciplines of military importance, the Department of Defense (DoD) plans to award fellowships in April 2018, subject to the availability of funds. The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship is highly competitive.  Since its inception in 1989, NDSEG has awarded nearly 3,500 fellowships from over 58,000 applications to U.S. citizens and nationals who pursue a doctoral degree in one of fifteen supported disciplines at a U.S. institution of their choosing.

NDSEG Fellowships last for a period of up to four years (based on continued funding), and covers full tuition and mandatory fees.  Fellows also receive a monthly stipend, and up to $1,500 a year in medical insurance.  The NDSEG Fellowship is sponsored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), the Army Research Office (ARO), and the Office of Naval Research (ONR) under the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (OSD) for Research and Engineering.

Eligibility:

• The NDSEG Fellowship Program is open only to applicants who are citizens or nationals of the United States. The term “nationals” refers to native residents of a possession of the United States such as American Samoa. It does not refer to a citizen of another country who has applied for U.S. citizenship. Persons who hold permanent resident status are not eligible. Proof of citizenship will be required upon formal offer.
• Applicants must have received or be on track to receive their bachelor’s degrees by Summer 2018. To be eligible, applicants must either be enrolled in their final year of undergraduate studies, or have completed no more than two years of full-time years graduate study in the discipline in which they are applying. Applicants who have received a medical degree or Ph.D. in science or engineering are not eligible for the NDSEG fellowship.
• NDSEG Fellows must be enrolled full-time and must be pursuing graduate study at a U.S. institution; the NDSEG Fellowship does not pay for tuition at any non-U.S. institution

NVIDIA Graduate Fellowships

NVIDIA has long believed that investing in university talent is beneficial to the industry and key to our continued growth and success. The NVIDIA Graduate Fellowship Program now provides funding in the amount of up to $50,000 per award to Ph.D. students who are researching topics that will lead to major advances in the graphics and high-performance computing industries, and are investigating innovative ways of leveraging the power of the GPU. NVIDIA particularly invites submissions from students pushing the envelope in artificial intelligence, deep neural networks, autonomous vehicles, and related fields. We select up to ten students each year who have the talent, aptitude and initiative to work closely with us early in their careers. Recipients not only receive crucial funding for their research, but are able to conduct groundbreaking work with access to NVIDIA products, technology and some of the most talented minds in the field.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Students must have already completed their first year of Ph.D. level studies (at the time of application)
• Students must have majors in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, System Architecture, Electrical Engineering, or a related area
• Students must be engaged in active research as part of their PhD thesis
• Students must be enrolled as a full-time Ph.D. student during the 2018-2019 academic year (9 months) of the award — this means they should not be expecting to graduate sooner than May/June 2019

Generation Google Scholarship

The Generation Google Scholarship was established to help aspiring computer scientists excel in technology and become leaders in the field. Selected students will receive 10,000 USD (for those studying in the US) or 5,000 CAD (for those studying in Canada) for the 2018-2019 school year. As part of the scholarship, current high school seniors who are entering their first year of university in 2018-2019 will be required to attend Google’s Computer Science Summer Institute (CSSI) in the summer of 2018. Current undergraduate or graduate students will be invited to attend the Google Scholars’ Retreat in the summer of 2018.

To be eligible to apply, applicants must:

• Be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student for the 2017-2018 academic year.
• Intend to be enrolled or accepted as a full-time student at a university in the US or Canada for the 2018-2019 school year.
• Be pursuing a computer science or computer engineering degree, or a degree in a closely related technical field.
• Exemplify leadership and demonstrate a passion for computer science and technology.
• Exhibit a strong record of academic achievement.

Women Techmakers Scholars Program

Through the Women Techmakers Scholars Program – formerly the Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship Program – Google is furthering Dr. Anita Borg’s vision of creating gender equality in the field of computer science by encouraging women to excel in computing and technology and become active leaders and role models in the field.

Women Techmakers Scholars will each receive $10,000 USD (for students in the US) or $5,000 CAD (for students in Canada) for the 2018-2019 academic year. All scholarship recipients will be invited to attend the annual Google Scholars’ Retreat in Mountain View, California in 2018 to connect with fellow scholars, network with Googlers and participate in a number of development workshops. Professional development and community outreach opportunities will continue to be offered after the retreat. As a Women Techmakers Scholar, you will join a global community of Scholars Program participants designed to provide a forum to share resources, support other women in tech and collaborate on projects to make continued impact.

Eligibility Requirements:

• Identify as female
• Currently be enrolled at an accredited university for the 2017-2018 academic year

Google Lime Scholarship Program

Google is committed to helping the innovators of the future make the most of their talents by providing scholarships and networking retreats for computer science students with disabilities.

Recipients of the 2018 Google Lime Scholarship will each receive a scholarship for the 2018-2019 academic year. Selected students will also be invited to attend the annual Google Scholars’ Retreat at the Googleplex in Mountain View, California, in Summer 2018. Candidates will also be considered for software engineering internship opportunities with Google.  Scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of candidates’ academic background and a demonstrated passion for computer science. Scholarships awards will be in the amount of $10,000 for those studying in the US and $5,000 for those studying in Canada (based on tuition costs).

Eligibility Requirements:

• A current undergraduate, graduate or PhD student enrolled at a university in the U.S. or Canada (freshmen/first years and international students studying in the U.S. or Canada are eligible to apply); and also
• Continuing current studies or intend to be enrolled in or accepted as a full-time student in a new program (e.g., graduating and pursuing an advanced degree) at a university in the U.S. or Canada in the 2018-2019 academic year
• Pursuing a Computer Science or Computer Engineering degree, or a degree in a closely related technical field (such as software engineering; or electrical engineering with a heavy computer science course load)
• Maintaining a strong academic performance
• A student with a visible or invisible disability (defined as someone who has, or considers themselves to have, a long-term, or recurring, issue that impacts one or more major activities that others may consider to be a daily function); this definition also includes the perception among others that a disability exists. We know that 90% of disabilities on campus are invisible, and candidates with all disabilities are encouraged to apply

National Physical Science Consortium Graduate Fellowships in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering

Application Deadline:  December 8, 2017 (but application must be commenced in the online system by November 30, 2017)

The National Physical Science Consortium is a partnership between government agencies and laboratories, industry, and higher education. NPSC’s goal is to increase the number of American citizens with graduate degrees in the physical sciences and related engineering fields, emphasizing recruitment of a diverse applicant pool. Though the fields supported can vary annually depending on employer needs, in general NPSC covers the following: Astronomy, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Materials Science, Mathematical Sciences, Physics, and their subdisciplines, and related engineering fields: Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Environmental, Mechanical.

The NPSC Graduate Fellowship provides support for up to six years, including a $20,000 annual stipend and tuition coverage. It also allows a fellow also to hold a research or teaching assistantship, includes one or two paid summer internships with a government agency, and provides a mentor and opportunities for a lasting relationship with the sponsor.

Eligibility:

NPSC welcomes applications from any qualified U.S. citizen who has the ability to pursue graduate work at an NPSC member institution. Applicants at any stage of their graduate program may apply, as long as they will be available to accept two summers of paid internship. Those who already possess a doctoral degree are ineligible.

DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Program

The goal of the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is to prepare graduate students for science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission, by providing graduate thesis research opportunities at DOE laboratories. The SCGSR program provides supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to pursue part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE laboratory/facility in areas that address scientific challenges central to the Office of Science mission. The research opportunity is expected to advance the graduate students’ overall doctoral thesis while providing access to the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the DOE laboratories/facilities.

The SCGSR program provides supplemental funds for graduate awardees to conduct part of their thesis research at a host DOE laboratory/facility in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist within a defined award period. Awardees are eligible to receive a monthly stipend in the amount of up to $3,000 for general living expenses while at the host DOE laboratory/facility during the award period.  Awardees are also eligible to be reimbursed for their in-bound and out-bound travel expenses to the host DOE laboratory/facility if the host DOE national laboratory/facility is greater than 50 miles from their university/resident location.

Eligibility:

• Applicants must be U.S. Citizens or Permanent Resident Aliens at the time of application and be at least 18 years of age at the time of applying.
• Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a Qualified Graduate Program with the Ph.D. as their degree objective. At the time of application, applicants must have obtained the Ph.D. candidacy at their home institution, and must have established a defined graduate thesis project and graduate thesis advisor.
• Applicants must be pursuing a Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, material sciences, biology (non-medical), mathematics, engineering, computer or computational sciences, or select areas of environmental sciences at an accredited college or university in the United States or its territories.
• Applicants must demonstrate that their graduate thesis research is in an area of fundamental research aligned with the aligned with the DOE Office of Science Priority Research Areas identified for the 2017 SCGSR Solicitation 2.
• The applicant and their primary graduate thesis advisor are responsible for identifying a collaborating research scientist at a DOE laboratory and jointly developing the research proposal as part of the SCGSR application process.
