The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) helps ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science and engineering in the United States and reinforces its diversity. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions.

Fellows share in the prestige and opportunities that become available when they are selected. Fellows benefit from a three-year annual stipend of $34,000 along with a $12,000 cost of education allowance for tuition and fees (at UW, the remainder is covered by the Graduate School), opportunities for international research and professional development, and the freedom to conduct their own research at any accredited U.S. institution of graduate education they choose.


To be eligible, you must:

  • be a US citizen, US national, or permanent resident
  • intend to pursue a research-based Master’s or Ph.D. program in an NSF-supported field
  • be enrolled in an eligible program at an accredited United States graduate institution, with a US campus, by the fall after the application is submitted
  • have completed no more than 12 months of full-time graduate study (or the equivalent) by August 1 of the year the application is submitted, or meet the criteria for the extenuating circumstance described in Section IV of the Program Solicitation.

DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research Program

Application Deadline:  May 16, 2017

The goal of the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is to prepare graduate students for science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission, by providing graduate thesis research opportunities at DOE laboratories.  The SCGSR program provides supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to pursue part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE laboratory in areas that address scientific challenges central to the Office of Science mission. Supplemental awards are intended to cover incremental costs associated with living and travel expenses during the award period. The SCGSR program does not provide additional support for supplies, materials, or travel while conducting the SCGSR research project at the host DOE laboratory during the award period.


  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizens or Permanent Resident Aliens at the time of application and be at least 18 years of age at the time of applying.
  • Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a Qualified Graduate Program with the Ph.D. as their degree objective. At the time of application, applicants must have obtained the Ph.D. candidacy at their home institution, and must have established a defined graduate thesis project and graduate thesis advisor.
  • Applicants must be pursuing a Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, material sciences, biology (non-medical), mathematics, engineering, computer or computational sciences, or select areas of environmental sciences at an accredited college or university in the United States or its territories.
  • Applicants must demonstrate that their graduate thesis research is in an area of fundamental research aligned with the DOE Office of Science Priority Research Areas identified for the 2017 SCGSR Solicitation 1.
  • The applicant and their primary graduate thesis advisor are responsible for identifying a collaborating research scientist at a DOE laboratory and jointly developing the research proposal as part of the SCGSR application process.

DataONE Summer Internship Program

The Data Observation Network for Earth (DataONE) is a virtual organization dedicated to providing open, persistent, robust, and secure access to biodiversity and environmental data, supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation. DataONE is pleased to announce the availability of summer research internships for undergraduates, graduate students and recent postgraduates. Interns undertake a 9 week program of work centered around one of the designated projects. Each intern will be paired with one primary mentor and, in some cases, secondary and tertiary mentors. Interns need not necessarily be at the same location or institution as their mentor(s).

The program is open to undergraduate students, graduate students, and postgraduates who have received their degree within the past five years. Given the broad range of projects, there are no restrictions on academic backgrounds or field of study. Interns must be at least 18 years of age by the program start date, must be currently enrolled or employed at a U.S. university or other research institution and must currently reside in, and be eligible to work in, the United States. Interns are expected to be available approximately 40 hours/week during the internship period (noted above) with significant availability during the normal business hours. Interns from previous years are eligible to participate.

Interns will receive a stipend of $5,000 for participation, paid in two installments (one at the midterm and one at the conclusion of the program). In addition, required travel expenses will be borne by DataONE.

Society of Women Engineers Scholarships

Application Deadline:  February 15, 2017

Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Scholarships support women pursuing ABET-accredited graduate student programs in preparation for careers in engineering, engineering technology and computer science in the United States. In 2016, SWE disbursed approximately 230 new and renewed scholarships valued at more than $750,000.

Applicants complete one application and are considered for all scholarships for which they are eligible. Scholarships are typically awarded in May for use during the upcoming academic year.


  • Only women are eligible.
  • Masters and PhD candidates must be enrolled or accepted at a school with ABET-accredited programs in engineering, computing, or technology.
  • You must be planning to attend full time (exceptions are made for reentry and non-traditional applicants).
  • You must not be fully funded for tuition, fees, and books or equivalent.
  • SWE’s Scholarship Program is open to both SWE members and non-members; however, some of the scholarships do require SWE membership.

CRA-W Scholarships for Women Studying Information Security

Each year in co-sponsorship with Applied Computer Security Associates (ACSA) and the Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE), the Computing Research Association-Women (CRA-W) presents the Scholarship for Women Studying Information Security (SWSIS) to 10-15 women in their undergraduate or Master’s studies.

Women studying information security may apply for consideration to receive the scholarship for their third or fourth year of undergraduate studies, or for a Masters’ program. To be eligible, you must be accepted at or enrolled in a US campus of a US university. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents.

Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship Program

The Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) provides outstanding benefits and opportunities to students pursuing doctoral degrees in fields that use high-performance computing to solve complex science and engineering problems. Computational science is interdisciplinary by nature, using algorithms, mathematics and computers to analyze and solve scientific and engineering problems. The DOE CSGF’s unusual program of study helps nurture this crosscutting foundation. The result: scientists who may reside in science, mathematics, engineering or computer science departments but share an interest in research using computing and mathematical methods.


The DOE CSGF is open to U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens who plan full-time, uninterrupted study toward a Ph.D. at an accredited U.S. university. We encourage applications from students in engineering and the physical, computer, mathematical or life sciences. The fellowship provides four years of support, but must be renewed each summer. At the time of application, applicants must be undergraduate seniors, applicants with no more than B.S. or B.A. degrees who are not enrolled in graduate school, or first-year graduate students (M.S. degree or Ph.D. students without an M.S. degree)

During the fellowship period, fellows are required to be enrolled as full-time graduate students at an accredited U.S. college or university and conduct research in areas of interest to the DOE. The summer should be spent conducting full-time research related to the completion of one’s degree program, enrolled in classes or on a practicum assignment.


  • A yearly stipend of $36,000
  • Payment of full tuition and required fees during the appointment period (at any accredited U.S. university)
  • A $5,000 academic allowance in the first fellowship year and a $1,000 allowance each renewed year (to be used for the purchase of a computer workstation or for research/professional development expenses)
  • Up to four years of total support, depending on renewal
  • A twelve-week practicum experience at one of 21 DOE national laboratories or sites, including access to DOE supercomputers
  • A rigorous program of study that ensures fellows have solid backgrounds in a scientific or engineering discipline plus computer science and applied mathematics
  • An annual program review for fellows, alumni, university and DOE laboratory staff, held each summer in the Washington, D.C. area

American Association of University Women (AAUW) Selected Professions Fellowships

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is the nation’s leading voice promoting equity and education for women and girls. Since it founding in 1881, AAUW members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day — educational, social, economic, and political.

Selected Professions Fellowships are awarded to women who intend to pursue a full-time course of study at accredited U.S. institutions during the fellowship year in one of the designated degree programs where women’s participation traditionally has been low.

Selected Professions Fellowships are awarded for the following master’s programs:

  • Architecture
  • Computer/information sciences
  • Engineering
  • Mathematics/statistics

Fellowships in the following degree programs are restricted to women of color, who have been underrepresented in these fields:

  • Master’s in business administration — applicants may apply for second year of study only
  • Law — applicants may apply for third year of study only
  • Doctorate in medicine — applicants may apply for third or fourth year of study only

Applicants must be women who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States who have achieved high standards of academic excellence and show promise of distinction in their respective fields. Applicants must be full-time students at an accredited U.S. institution during the fellowship year, and should be pursuing a course of study in the United States over the full academic year. Priority is given to women who do not already hold a master’s or first professional degree.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships

As a means of increasing the number of U.S. citizens and nationals trained in science and engineering disciplines of military importance, the Department of Defense (DoD) plans to award approximately 180 new three-year graduate fellowships in April 2017, subject to the availability of funds. The DoD will offer these fellowships to individuals who have demonstrated the ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering. NDSEG Fellowships last for three years and pay for full tuition and all mandatory fees, a monthly stipend, and up to $1,000 a year in medical insurance (this excludes dental and vision insurance). NDSEG Fellows do not incur any military or other service obligation.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships are awarded to applicants who will pursue a doctoral degree in, or closely related to, an area of DoD interest within one of the fifteen following disciplines:

The NDSEG Fellowship Program is open only to applicants who are citizens or nationals of the United States. The term “nationals” refers to native residents of a possession of the United States such as American Samoa. It does not refer to a citizen of another country who has applied for U.S. citizenship. Persons who hold permanent resident status are not eligible.

NDSEG Fellowships are intended for students at or near the beginning of their doctoral studies in science or engineering. Applicants must have received or be on track to receive their bachelor’s degrees by Fall 2017. NDSEG Fellows must be enrolled full-time and must be pursuing graduate study at a U.S. institution; the NDSEG Fellowship does not pay for tuition at any non-U.S. institution.  The applicant’s field of study must fall within one of the fifteen supported disciplines.

National Physical Science Consortium Graduate Fellowships in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering

The National Physical Science Consortium (NPSC) is a partnership between government agencies and laboratories, industry, and higher education. NPSC’s goal is to increase the number of American citizens with graduate degrees in the physical sciences and related engineering fields, emphasizing recruitment of a diverse applicant pool. NPSC’s member universities (including the University of Washington) do not require fellows to pay tuition.

The NPSC Graduate Fellowship is open to all American citizens, provides an annual $20,000 expense allowance, lasts for up to six years, covers full tuition and required fees, allows a research or teaching assistantship, includes one or two paid summer internships with a government agency, and provides a mentor. Initial support may be for two or three years, or for a full six years, depending on the employer-sponsor. If the initial support is for the shorter period, it may be extended up to six years at the discretion of the employer. Although the fields supported may vary  depending on employer needs, in general NPSC covers the following: Astronomy, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Materials Science, Mathematical Sciences, Physics, and their subdisciplines, and related engineering fields: Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Environmental, Mechanical.

NPSC welcomes applications from any qualified U.S. citizen who has the ability to pursue graduate work at an NPSC member institution. Applicants at any stage of their graduate program may apply, as long as they will be available to accept two summers of paid internship. Those who already possess a doctoral degree are ineligible.

Google Lime Scholarship Program

Google is committed to helping the innovators of the future make the most of their talents by providing scholarships and networking retreats for computer science students with disabilities. Recipients of the 2017 Google Lime Scholarship will each receive a scholarship for the 2017-2018 academic year. Selected students will also be invited to attend the annual Google Scholars’ Retreat at the Googleplex in Mountain View, California, in 2017. Candidates will also be considered for software engineering internship opportunities with Google.  Scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of candidates’ academic background and demonstrated passion for computer science – $10,000 for those studying in the US and $5,000 for those studying in Canada (based on tuition costs).

Eligibility Requirements:

2017 Scholarship Applicants must match the following criteria:

  • An undergraduate, graduate or PhD student currently enrolled at a university in the U.S. or Canada (freshmen/first years and international students studying in the U.S. or Canada are eligible to apply); and also
  • Intend to be enrolled in or accepted as a full time student at a university in the U.S. or Canada in the 2017-2018 academic year
  • Pursuing a Computer Science or Computer Engineering degree, or a degree in a closely related technical field (such as software engineering; or electrical engineering with a heavy computer science course load)
  • Maintaining a strong academic performance
  • A student with a visible or invisible disability (defined as someone who has, or considers themselves to have, a long-term, or recurring, issue that impacts one or more major activities that others may consider to be a daily function); this definition also includes the perception among others that a disability exists. We know that 90% of disabilities on campus are invisible, and candidates with all disabilities are encouraged to apply
  • Exemplify leadership and demonstrate a commitment to and passion for computer science and technology
  • Previous Google Lime Scholars are unfortunately not able to be considered
