NRC Research Associateship Programs Awards

The National Academies’ NRC Research Associateship Program promotes excellence in scientific and technological research conducted by the U.S. government through the administration of programs offering graduate, postdoctoral, and senior level research opportunities at sponsoring federal laboratories and affiliated institutions.

Competitive awards are available for scientists and engineers to conduct independent research in federal laboratories and affiliated institutions. Awards include attractive stipends, health insurance, professional travel and relocation. Awards are available for scientists and engineers at all stages of their career. Applicants should hold, or anticipate receiving, an earned doctorate in science or engineering. Degrees from universities abroad should be equivalent in training and research experience to a degree from a U.S. institution. Many awards are open to foreign nationals as well as to U.S. citizens.

Smithsonian Environmental Research Center Internship Program – Fall Projects

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center’s (SERC) Internship Program offers undergraduate and beginning graduate students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fields of environmental research and public engagement. This program enables students to work on independent research projects under the direction of a SERC mentor.

Intern projects span the range of research conducted at SERC, including environmental chemistry, marine and esturaine ecology, molecular ecology, and terrestrial ecology. Projects are also offered in public engagement, with opportunities in environmental education, citizen science, and science writing. Although students will become familiar with much of the research of SERC in general, individuals will devote most of their time to an independent research project. Students will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge in a selected field of study and to learn a variety of research techniques through firsthand experience. At the conclusion of the internship, student participants will be expected to present the findings of their independent projects in a formal seminar to the SERC community.

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center will consider applications from currently enrolled undergraduate and Master’s students, or students who have recently graduated from undergraduate or Master’s programs. Applicants must be in a position to commit fully to the completion of a project. U.S. citizenship is not a requirement to participate in this program.

Selected candidates will receive a stipend of $500.00 per week. There is limited on-site dormitory space available for $105.00 per week. SERC does not supply board, but the dorms are equipped with full kitchens. We can accommodate up to 24 residents.

Mazamas Graduate Student Research Grants

The Mazamas, a mountaineering organization based in Portland, Oregon, is dedicated to the exploration and preservation of mountain environments in the Pacific Northwest.  Mazamas activities include gathering and disseminating scientific information concerning the natural features of mountains, forests, rivers, and lakes.

The Mazamas Research Committee annually awards research grants for scientific studies promoting wilderness ecology, mountain travel, and safety in the outdoors. Investigations of geologic features, biotic communities, and human endeavors pertaining to the enjoyment and safety of outdoor recreation are all relevant research topics. The maximum award in the graduate student category is $2,000.

L’Oréal USA For Women in Science Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

The L’Oréal USA For Women in Science fellowship program awards five women postdoctoral scientists annually with grants of $60,000 each for their contributions in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields and commitment to serving as role models for younger generations. The program is the U.S. component of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science International Fellowships. Celebrating its thirteenth year in the U.S., the For Women in Science program has awarded 65 postdoctoral women scientists over $3 million in grants.

Eligibility:

  • Must have a conferred PhD and have started in a postdoctoral research position by February 3, 2017
  • Must maintain the status of postdoctoral researcher throughout the fellowship year
  • Must be American born, naturalized citizen or permanent resident
  • Must be affiliated with a U.S. based academic or research institution
  • Must plan to conduct their postdoctoral studies and research in the U.S.
  • Must be involved in basic research in the life and physical/material sciences, engineering & technology, computer science and mathematics
  • Cannot be in a faculty position
  • Must commit to at least twenty hours of activity in support of women and girls in science (e.g. mentoring, classroom visits, media, events)
  • Must be available the week of October 30, 2017 for the For Women in Science Awards Week

Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides undergraduate and graduate students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. Selected candidates train under the mentorship of program officials and scientists on focused research projects, consistent with the mission of the Office of Fossil Energy. During these 10-week energy fellowships, participants receive a stipend, and some students may be eligible for housing and travel allowances for the duration of the program.

Laboratory placements are determined in accordance with host site needs and each student’s qualifications.  Placement locations include:

  • Department of Energy Headquarters, Washington, D.C. and Germantown, MD
  • National Energy Technology Laboratory, Pittsburgh, PA; Morgantown, WV; Albany, OR
  • Strategic Petroleum Reserve, New Orleans, LA; and other SPR sites in LA and TX
  • Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, TN
  • Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, WA
  • Sandia National Laboratory, Livermore, CA
  • Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, CA

  • Los Alamos National Lab, Los Alamos, NM

Eligible applicants must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, be currently enrolled full-time as a degree-seeking student in a STEM program at an accredited college or university at the Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral level, be at least 18 years of age at time of application, be a U.S. Citizen, and be available to participate in the full 10-week program (June 5-August 11, 2017).

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships

Application Deadline:  December 9, 2016

As a means of increasing the number of U.S. citizens and nationals trained in science and engineering disciplines of military importance, the Department of Defense (DoD) plans to award approximately 180 new three-year graduate fellowships in April 2017, subject to the availability of funds. The DoD will offer these fellowships to individuals who have demonstrated the ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering. NDSEG Fellowships last for three years and pay for full tuition and all mandatory fees, a monthly stipend, and up to $1,000 a year in medical insurance (this excludes dental and vision insurance). NDSEG Fellows do not incur any military or other service obligation.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships are awarded to applicants who will pursue a doctoral degree in, or closely related to, an area of DoD interest within one of the fifteen following disciplines:

Eligibility

The NDSEG Fellowship Program is open only to applicants who are citizens or nationals of the United States. The term “nationals” refers to native residents of a possession of the United States such as American Samoa. It does not refer to a citizen of another country who has applied for U.S. citizenship. Persons who hold permanent resident status are not eligible.

NDSEG Fellowships are intended for students at or near the beginning of their doctoral studies in science or engineering. Applicants must have received or be on track to receive their bachelor’s degrees by Fall 2017. NDSEG Fellows must be enrolled full-time and must be pursuing graduate study at a U.S. institution; the NDSEG Fellowship does not pay for tuition at any non-U.S. institution.  The applicant’s field of study must fall within one of the fifteen supported disciplines.

NOAA Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program recognizes outstanding scholarship and encourages independent graduate level research — particularly by female and minority students — in NOAA mission-related sciences of oceanography, marine biology and maritime archaeology, including all science, engineering and resource management of ocean and coastal areas. Scholarship selections are based on academic excellence, letters of recommendations, research and career goals and financial need.

Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarships may provide, subject to appropriations, yearly support of up to $42,000 per student (a 12-month stipend of $30,000 in addition to an education allowance of up to $12,000), and up to $10,000 of support for a 4-6 week program collaboration at a NOAA facility. Masters students may be supported for up to two years, and doctoral students for up to four years. Depending on funding, approximately two to four scholarships are awarded each year.

To apply, each applicant must:

  • be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or a citizen of a U.S. territory;
  • pursue or intend to pursue a masters or doctoral level degree in oceanography, maritime archaeology or marine biology, including all science, engineering and resource management of ocean and coastal areas (or related areas), at a U.S. accredited institution;
  • have and maintain a minimum cumulative and term grade point average of 3.3 or higher; and
  • maintain full-time student status for the duration of the scholarship award.

National Physical Science Consortium Graduate Fellowships in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering

The National Physical Science Consortium (NPSC) is a partnership between government agencies and laboratories, industry, and higher education. NPSC’s goal is to increase the number of American citizens with graduate degrees in the physical sciences and related engineering fields, emphasizing recruitment of a diverse applicant pool. NPSC’s member universities (including the University of Washington) do not require fellows to pay tuition.

The NPSC Graduate Fellowship is open to all American citizens, provides an annual $20,000 expense allowance, lasts for up to six years, covers full tuition and required fees, allows a research or teaching assistantship, includes one or two paid summer internships with a government agency, and provides a mentor. Initial support may be for two or three years, or for a full six years, depending on the employer-sponsor. If the initial support is for the shorter period, it may be extended up to six years at the discretion of the employer. Although the fields supported may vary  depending on employer needs, in general NPSC covers the following: Astronomy, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Materials Science, Mathematical Sciences, Physics, and their subdisciplines, and related engineering fields: Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Environmental, Mechanical.

Eligibility:
NPSC welcomes applications from any qualified U.S. citizen who has the ability to pursue graduate work at an NPSC member institution. Applicants at any stage of their graduate program may apply, as long as they will be available to accept two summers of paid internship. Those who already possess a doctoral degree are ineligible.

Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program

The Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program has been established by the Department of Defense (DoD) to support students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The program aims to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers working at DoD laboratories by offering undergraduate or graduate students in STEM disciplines a full scholarship and an employment opportunity upon degree completion.

Eligible disciplines

Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, Biosciences, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Cognitive, Neural, and Behavioral Sciences, Computer and Computational Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Geosciences, Industrial and Systems Engineering (technical tracks only), Information Sciences, Materials Science and Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Oceanography, Operations Research (technical tracks only), Physics

  • 18 years of age or older as of August 1, 2017
  • able to participate in summer internships at DoD laboratories
  • willing to accept post-graduate employment with the DoD
  • a student in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the time of award
  • Graduate applicants can be either currently enrolled in a regionally accredited U.S. college or university or awaiting notification of admission to such. If awaiting admission, you must be accepted for entrance in the fall 2017 term

Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research Program

Application deadline:   October 1, 2016

The Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) program has provided undergraduate and graduate students with valuable educational experiences since 1922. By encouraging close working relationships between students and mentors, the program promotes scientific excellence and achievement through hands-on learning.

The program awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering. Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision related research. Students use the funding to pay for travel expenses to and from a research site, or for purchase of non-standard laboratory equipment necessary to complete a specific research project.

While membership in Sigma Xi is not a requirement for applying for funding from the Grants-in-Aid of Research program, approximately 75% of funds are restricted for use by dues paying student members of Sigma Xi or students whose project advisor is a dues paying member of Sigma Xi. Students from any country are eligible to receive funding.

An additional funding round will be held in spring 2017, with an application deadline of March 15, 2017.
