Horton Hydrology Research Grant

The Horton Research Grant for Ph.D. students promotes excellence through encouragement of the next generation of professionals in the hydrological sciences. Each year the grant has been awarded to up to three students during their candidacy for a Ph.D. degree in hydrology, water resources, or a closely related field. The award provides a one-year grant (typically $10,000) to cover research costs and travel expenses related to attendance of the American Geophysical Union fall meeting ($500 U.S. /$1,000 international).

Eligibility:

  • Graduate students are eligible at any point in their doctoral program in hydrology, water resources, or a closely related field, with the stipulation that they will be enrolled PhD students throughout the duration of the grant. It is expected that one grant will be directed towards a PhD student in the first half of his/her studies.
  • Appropriate topics may be in hydrology (including its physical, chemical, or biological aspects) or in water resources policy sciences (including economics, systems analysis, sociology and law).
  • U.S. citizenship is not a requirement to apply.
  • Recipients must be active student members of the American Geophysical Union.

Livermore National Laboratory Graduate Scholar Program

The Livermore Graduate Scholar Program (LGSP) and its predecessor programs have played a critical role for many years in helping to recruit new scientific and engineering talent to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Top Ph.D. students are granted appointments of up to four years to conduct research of interest to the Laboratory while completing their thesis.

A key feature of the program is the triad relationship between the student, the university thesis advisor, and the Laboratory technical supervisor. This team will jointly plan and execute the student’s research program. The Lab technical supervisor is a scientist or engineer and should ideally be a member of the student’s thesis committee. Once accepted into the LGSP, the student becomes an employee of LLNL and is expected to perform the majority of his or her research at the Laboratory. Our expectation for a successful proposal is that the student will spend 75% of the calendar year at LLNL, though scheduling is flexible. LGSP students receive a highly competitive salary, but the program does not cover tuition costs.

LGSP appointments have traditionally been made to students of physics, astrophysics, laser science, chemistry, engineering, environmental science, computer science, biology, genetics and biotechnology, materials science, and related disciplines. Non-technical or non-traditional proposals may be considered if a suitable LLNL mentor/supervisor can be identified. Applicants must be full-time graduate students pursuing a Ph.D. Students are expected to have completed the majority of their graduate coursework and have successfully passed any required comprehensive examinations. Students must have a thesis advisor and an identified LLNL technical supervisor.

UW CoMotion Technology Licensing Fellows Program

CoMotion at the University of Washington is the collaborative innovation hub dedicated to expanding the societal impact of the UW community. By developing and connecting local and global innovation ecosystems, CoMotion helps innovators achieve the greatest impact from their discoveries.

The Technology Licensing Fellows Program offers interested students a great chance to understand the commercialization process and gain in-depth experience in university technology transfer. The Fellows program provides access to Seattle’s vibrant venture and entrepreneur communities and exposure to alternative career opportunities.  Fellows develop real-world skills as they learn to assess new technologies, perform market research, and create marketing materials. Once trained, they work on clearly delineated early-stage projects. Fellows work a maximum of ten hours per week, and must be available to work at the CoMotion offices for at least two of those hours. Appointments are for one year, and can be renewed throughout the Fellow’s PhD program.

Eligibility

  • Degree – Ph.D. level students with authorization to work in the US.
  • Area of Study – Including, but not limited to, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry and Materials Sciences, Information Technologies, Medicine/Life Science.
  • Consent of Ph.D. supervisor.

Selection Criteria

  • Strong scientific/technical background
  • Commitment and availability for 10 hours per week (for a minimum of 1 calendar year)
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to tackle new challenges
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Fall 2017-Spring 2018 Chemistry/Physics TA Position in the College of Engineering STARS Program

The College of Engineering office of Diversity and Access needs a teaching assistant to provide academic support for freshman and sophomore engineering students. The principal focus will be to support students participating in the Washington State Academic RedShirt (STARS) Program.  The position will provide support in freshman and sophomore chemistry and physics courses and assist students with building an understanding of the engineering disciplines.

Duties and Responsibilities (varies by quarter):

  • Serve as a teaching assistant for STARS program courses in Chemistry and Physics as needed. This includes leading workshops, tutoring, and grading.
  • Serve as lead course teaching assistant for the STARS support workshops in Chemistry 142 and Chemistry 152 as needed.
  • Serve as lead course teaching assistant for the STARS support workshops in Physics for Physics 121 & 122 as needed.
  • Collaborate one-on-one or in small groups with students in the Engineering Academic Center to provide academic and learning skills support.
  • Attend scheduled meetings and training events for the STARS program and for the Engineering Academic Center tutors/workshop facilitators.
  • Attend a 4-hour meeting sometime between mid-August to early September of 2017.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in engineering, chemistry, or physics.
  • Strong commitment to teaching required.  Teaching or tutoring experience desired.
  • Strong commitment to working with students from economically and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.

Salary: This is a 50% FTE teaching assistant appointment and includes the standard tuition waiver and health benefits for TAs. The salary is commensurate with each appointee’s academic standing.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships

As a means of increasing the number of U.S. citizens and nationals trained in science and engineering disciplines of military importance, the Department of Defense (DoD) plans to award approximately 180 new three-year graduate fellowships in April 2017, subject to the availability of funds. The DoD will offer these fellowships to individuals who have demonstrated the ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering. NDSEG Fellowships last for three years and pay for full tuition and all mandatory fees, a monthly stipend, and up to $1,000 a year in medical insurance (this excludes dental and vision insurance). NDSEG Fellows do not incur any military or other service obligation.

Persons who hold permanent resident status are not eligible.

NDSEG Fellowships are intended for students at or near the beginning of their doctoral studies in science or engineering. Applicants must have received or be on track to receive their bachelor’s degrees by Fall 2017. NDSEG Fellows must be enrolled full-time and must be pursuing graduate study at a U.S. institution; the NDSEG Fellowship does not pay for tuition at any non-U.S. institution.  The applicant’s field of study must fall within one of the fifteen supported disciplines.

National Physical Science Consortium Graduate Fellowships in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering

The National Physical Science Consortium (NPSC) is a partnership between government agencies and laboratories, industry, and higher education. NPSC’s goal is to increase the number of American citizens with graduate degrees in the physical sciences and related engineering fields, emphasizing recruitment of a diverse applicant pool. NPSC’s member universities (including the University of Washington) do not require fellows to pay tuition.

The NPSC Graduate Fellowship is open to all American citizens, provides an annual $20,000 expense allowance, lasts for up to six years, covers full tuition and required fees, allows a research or teaching assistantship, includes one or two paid summer internships with a government agency, and provides a mentor. Initial support may be for two or three years, or for a full six years, depending on the employer-sponsor. If the initial support is for the shorter period, it may be extended up to six years at the discretion of the employer. Although the fields supported may vary  depending on employer needs, in general NPSC covers the following: Astronomy, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Materials Science, Mathematical Sciences, Physics, and their subdisciplines, and related engineering fields: Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Environmental, Mechanical.

Eligibility:
NPSC welcomes applications from any qualified U.S. citizen who has the ability to pursue graduate work at an NPSC member institution. Applicants at any stage of their graduate program may apply, as long as they will be available to accept two summers of paid internship. Those who already possess a doctoral degree are ineligible.

Smithsonian Environmental Research Center Internship Program

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center’s (SERC) Internship Program offers undergraduate and beginning graduate students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fields of environmental research and public engagement. This program enables students to work on independent research projects under the direction of a SERC mentor.

Intern projects span the range of research conducted at SERC, including environmental chemistry, marine and esturaine ecology, molecular ecology, and terrestrial ecology. Projects are also offered in public engagement, with opportunities in environmental education, citizen science, and science writing. Although students will become familiar with much of the research of SERC in general, individuals will devote most of their time to an independent research project. Students will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge in a selected field of study and to learn a variety of research techniques through firsthand experience. At the conclusion of the internship, student participants will be expected to present the findings of their independent projects in a formal seminar to the SERC community.

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center will consider applications from currently enrolled undergraduate and Master’s students, or students who have recently graduated from undergraduate or Master’s programs. Applicants must be in a position to commit fully to the completion of a project. U.S. citizenship is not a requirement to participate in this program.

Selected candidates will receive a stipend of $500.00 per week. There is limited on-site dormitory space available for $105.00 per week. SERC does not supply board, but the dorms are equipped with full kitchens. We can accommodate up to 24 residents.

ACS Women Chemists Committee (WCC)/Eli Lilly Travel Award

The ACS Women Chemists Committee (WCC) and Eli Lilly and Company sponsor a program to provide funding for undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral female chemists to travel to meetings to present the results of their research. Through this program, WCC and Eli Lilly and Company continue to increase the participation of women in the chemical sciences.

Awards are made on the basis of scientific merit and financial need. Funds may be applied only for registration, travel, and accommodations, and are restricted to travel to meetings within the United States. Grant funds are limited, but there are some funds designated for undergraduates.

In additional to financial support, the award provides networking opportunities for recipients who attend an ACS national meeting.

Smithsonian Environmental Research Center Internship Program

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center’s (SERC) Internship Program is accepting applications for Fall projects beginning September-December.

This program offers undergraduate and beginning graduate students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fields of environmental research and education. This program enables students to work on specific projects under the direction of SERC’s professional staff and is tailored to provide the maximum educational benefit to each participant.

Projects include terrestrial, atmospheric and estuarine environmental research within the disciplines of ecology, biology, chemistry, microbiology, botany, zoology, mathematics and physics. Projects are also offered in environmental education and environmental information management.

Although students will become familiar with all the  research being conducted by a particular staff member and with much of the research of SERC in general, individuals will devote most of their time to a project and content area of particular interest to them.

Selected candidates will receive a stipend of $500.00 per week.

U.S. citizenship is not a requirement to participate in this program.

DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research Program

The goal of the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is to prepare graduate students for science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission, by providing graduate thesis research opportunities at DOE laboratories.  The SCGSR program provides supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to pursue part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE laboratory in areas that address scientific challenges central to the Office of Science mission. The research opportunity is expected to advance the graduate students’ overall doctoral thesis while providing access to the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the DOE laboratories.

The SCGSR program provides supplemental funds for graduate awardees to conduct part of their thesis research at a host DOE laboratory in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist within a defined award period. The award period for the proposed research project at DOE laboratories may range from 3 to 12 consecutive months.

This opportunity — which includes a stipend and travel expenses — is open to U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents who are have achieved Ph.D. candidacy in a qualified graduate program (physics, chemistry, material sciences, non-medical biology, mathematics, engineering, computer or computational sciences, and select areas of environmental sciences).
