Indian Health Service Scholarship Program

The IHS Scholarship Program provides scholarship support to American Indian and Alaska Native students to pursue health profession careers and to place health care professionals within medically underserved Indian health programs throughout the continental United States and Alaska. The scholarship program provides financial support, including tuition, required fees, and living expenses, in exchange for a minimum two-year service commitment within an Indian health program in your chosen health professional discipline.

Applicants must 1) be US citizens or US nationals, 2) must be members or descendants of a federally recognized, state-recognized or terminated American Indian Tribe or Alaska Native village, and 3) be enrolled in a health professions degree program.

Agency for Health Care Research & Quality Grants for Health Services Research Dissertation

Application Deadline:  February 1, 2017

The AHRQ Grants for Health Services Research Dissertation Program provides dissertation grants for doctoral candidates. This program supports dissertation research that addresses AHRQ’s mission and priorities and welcomes any areas of health services research as dissertation project topics. The grants provide up to $40,000 in direct research costs. Applications for dissertation research grants must be responsive to AHRQ’s mission, which is to produce evidence to make health care safer, higher quality, more accessible, equitable and affordable, and to work with HHS and other partners to make sure that the evidence is understood and used.

Candidates must:

  • Be U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals, or permanent residents by the time of the grant award.
  • Be full-time academic students in good standing, who are enrolled in an accredited research doctoral program in such fields as behavioral sciences, health services research, nursing, social sciences, epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy, health informatics, engineering, and mathematics.
  • Have completed all non-dissertation requirements for their doctoral degree by the time of submission of the application, including completion of their qualifying exams. (The only exception allowable will be the completion of required clinical internships that follow completion of the dissertation.)
  • Not have more than part-time employment in addition to the requirements of their current, full-time academic student appointments (defined as greater than 20 hours per week).
  • Not be recipients of mentored career development awards.
  • Institution is any of the following: public or non-profit private institution (such as a university, college, faith-based or community-based organization), units of local or State government, eligible agencies of the Federal Government, and Indian/Native American Tribal Government or Designated Organizations.

Pedro Zamora Public Policy Fellowship

Application deadlines:   October 15, 2016 (also March 15 and July 15, 2017)

In the spirit of AIDS activist, educator, and reality-show trailblazer Pedro Zamora’s work to combat the spread of HIV, AIDS United offers a public policy fellowship in his name.  The Pedro Zamora Public Policy Fellowship is an excellent opportunity for both undergraduate and graduate students seeking experience in public policy and government affairs focused on HIV/AIDS issues.

Duties include:

  • Assisting in researching a variety of public health and civil rights issues related to HIV prevention, treatment and care
  • Attending Congressional hearings and coalition meetings
  • Monitoring voting records
  • Reviewing the federal register and Congressional Record
  • Preparation of briefing materials, correspondence, and mailings

Both graduate and undergraduate students are welcome to apply.  Fellows must commit to working a minimum of 30 hours per week for 8 weeks.  The maximum period is 26 weeks.  Candidates must be a U.S. citizen or have secured the necessary visa for authorized work in the U.S. prior to application.

The fellowship includes a living stipend and is highly competitive.  Applications are accepted for the fall, spring, and summer terms.

Christine Mirzayan Science & Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program

The Christine Mirzayan Science & Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program, now in its 19th year, provides early career individuals with the opportunity to spend 12 weeks at the Academies in Washington, DC learning about science and technology policy and the role that scientists and engineers play in advising the nation.

Each year, applicants from around the world become part of an Academies’ committee, board, or unit where they are assigned to a mentor and learn about the world of science and technology policy.  An immersive experience, the program is designed to broaden fellows’ appreciation of employment opportunities outside academia and leave them with both a firm grasp of the important and dynamic role of science and technology in decision-making and a better understanding of the role that they can play in strengthening the science and technology enterprise for the betterment of mankind.

Kirschstein NRSA Predoctoral Fellowship to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research

Application deadline:   August 13, 2016 (with additional cycles in December and April)

The purpose of this Kirschstein-NRSA predoctoral fellowship (F31) award is to enhance the diversity of the health-related research workforce by supporting the research training of predoctoral students from population groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research workforce, including underrepresented racial and ethnic groups and those with disabilities. Through this award program, promising predoctoral students will obtain individualized, mentored research training from outstanding faculty sponsors while conducting well-defined research projects in scientific health-related fields relevant to the missions of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers. The proposed mentored research training is expected to clearly enhance the individual’s potential to develop into a productive, independent research scientist.

Individual applicants may apply. They must have a baccalaureate degree and be currently enrolled in a PhD or equivalent research degree program (e.g., EngD, DNSc, DrPH, DSW, PharmD, PsyD, ScD), a formally combined MD/PhD program, or other combined professional/clinical and research doctoral (e.g., DDS/PhD) in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences at a domestic institution. The Kirschstein-NRSA F31 may not be used to support studies leading to the MD, DDS, or other clinical, health-professional training (e.g., DC, DMD, DNP, DO, DPM, DVM, ND, OD, AuD).

AHRQ Health Services Research Dissertation Grant

The overall goal of the AHRQ Health Services Research Dissertation Grant Program is to help ensure that a diverse pool of highly trained health services researchers is available in adequate numbers and appropriate research areas to address the research mission and priorities of AHRQ.  9-17 month awards are up to $40,000.

Applications for dissertation research grants must be responsive to AHRQ’s mission, which is to improve the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care for all Americans.  The research sponsored and conducted by the Agency develops and presents scientific evidence regarding all aspects of health care in the United States.  It addresses issues of organization, delivery, financing, utilization, patient and provider behavior, outcomes, effectiveness and cost.  It evaluates both clinical services and the system in which these services are provided.  These scientific results improve the evidence base to enable better decisions about health care, including such areas as disease prevention, appropriate use of medical technologies, improving diagnosis and treatment in cost-effective ways, long-term care, and reducing racial and ethnic disparities.

AHRQ has identified strategic goals as priority research areas.  Applied research applications must address one of these areas.  Applicants are strongly encouraged to focus on topical areas unique to AHRQ, demonstrating how expected results can be used or made available for use to enhance healthcare quality.  Results should be directly relevant to customers, such as providers and practitioners, administrators, payers, consumers, policymakers, and insurers.  The strategic research goals are:

  • Safety/quality – Reduce the risk of harm from health care services by promoting the delivery of appropriate care that achieves the best quality outcomes
  • Efficiency – Achieve wider access to effective health care services and reduce health care costs
  • Effectiveness – Assure that providers and consumers/patients use beneficial and timely health care information to make informed decision choices.

Candidates are required to address health services research issues critical to AHRQ priority populations, including: individuals living in inner city and rural (including frontier) areas; low-income and minority groups; women, children, the elderly; and individuals with special health care needs, including those with disabilities and those who need chronic or end-of-life health care.

Candidates must conduct dissertation projects which focus on health care delivery in the United States. AHRQ will not accept international health care research projects.

Eligibility

  • Candidates must be U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals, or permanent residents by the time the award is issued.
  • Candidates must be full-time students in good standing, who are enrolled in an accredited research doctoral program in such fields as the social or behavioral sciences, mathematics, engineering, health services research, nursing, social sciences, epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy, and health informatics.
  • Candidates with more than part-time employment (defined as greater than twenty hours per week), in addition to the requirements of their current, full-time academic student appointments, are not eligible to apply for this grant mechanism.
  • Students must complete all non-dissertation requirements for their doctoral degree by the time of submission of the application (except in cases where a clinical internship is required to follow the dissertation phase).  Approval of the dissertation proposal by the doctoral committee is required before the grant award is issued.

Tylenol Future Care Scholarship

Application deadline:   June 30, 2016

Each year the makers of TYLENOL® award annual scholarships to well deserving students pursuing careers in healthcare at accredited, nonprofit two or four-year colleges/universities in the United States.

Scholarships are available to graduate students in public health/health education, medical school, nursing and/or pharmacy degree programs. Students must have one or more years of school remaining; students who will be beginning their degree in fall 2016 are eligible to apply. Applicants must be a resident of the U.S. or Puerto Rico.

The selection committee will base their decisions on college GPA, academic records (in public health/health education, medical school, nursing, and/or pharmacy), community involvement/volunteer service, and essay content.

Scholarships ranging from $500 to $10,000 will be awarded and are not renewable. Scholarships will be applied to tuition, fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for course load.

AMBUCS Scholarships for Therapists

National AMBUCS, Inc. is a nonprofit charitable organization with a diverse membership dedicated to creating mobility and independence for people with disabilities.

National AMBUCS, Inc. awards over $150,000 with individual awards ranging from $500 to $1,500. There is one two-year award in the amount of $6,000. Award monies are deposited each semester to the student’s credit account with the financial aid office of the educational institution.

Students must be accepted in an accredited program by the appropriate health therapy profession authority in physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology, or hearing audiology. Scholarships are available to therapy students in their junior/senior year in a bachelor’s degree program, or a graduate program leading to a master’s or doctoral degree. Awards are based on financial need, US citizenship, commitment to local community, character for compassion and integrity, and career objectives.
