Japan Foundation Japanese Studies Fellowship Program

To deepen the understanding of Japan and to maintain good relations between Japan and the United States, the Japan Foundation grants fellowships for research in Japan.  The Japanese Studies Fellowship Program provides support to outstanding doctoral and postdoctoral scholars in the humanities or social sciences by offering the opportunity to conduct research in Japan.

Applicants for this opportunity must be American citizens, American citizens temporarily residing abroad, or permanent residents of the United States. However, Americans with permanent residency in other countries may submit their applications to the Japan Foundation’s office in the country where they reside or to the Japanese diplomatic mission of their resident country. Applicants residing in the United States who are neither U.S. citizens nor permanent residents may submit applications to the Japan Foundation’s Tokyo Headquarters.
