Fall 2015 TA Position in the Psychology Department

Description:
The UW-Seattle Pyschology Department has a Teaching Assistant position available for PSYCH 250: Racism & Minority Groups (Instructor: Gonzalo Guzman). PSYCH 250 provides undergraduates an overview of the causes, contexts, and consequences of racism and influence on racial identity formation. The aim of this course is to help students critically understand the ways in which racism operates at both the interpersonal and institutional level. There is an emphasis on cultural history, political and socioeconomic structures, as well as micro-level processes. Students will examine historical, sociological and current race issues in both a U.S. and global context.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attend lectures and weekly meetings
  • Prepare and facilitate quiz section discussions
  • Grade papers and exams with instructor
  • Prepare and maintain grade database
  • Maintain course webpage
  • Manage and respond to course-related e-mail
  • Hold regular office hours weekly

Additional Minimum Requirements:

  • UW doctoral student enrolled full-time (10 credits/quarter) or advanced Master’s student with relevant background knowledge and teaching experience* (*Priority will be given to PhD student applicants)
  • Ability to work 20 hours per week
  • Facility with Canvas, Dropbox, and the use of social media (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, etc.) in teaching settings

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Prior teaching experience on issues of race and racism in large classroom
  • Background in education, history, psychology, or other field related to the course
  • Prior teaching experience in diverse settings
  • Strong communication/facilitation skills
  • Experience working with undergraduate TAs
  • Experience with Clicker usage
