Update about the Foreign Language & Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS)

Receive tuition and a living stipend:

  • Academic Year Graduate: $18,000 tuition, $15,000 living stipend
  • Academic Year Undergrad: $10,000 tuition, $5,000 living stipend
  • Summer Grad/Undergrad: $5,000 tuition, $2500 living stipend

The National Resource Centers of the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies offer FLAS Fellowships to UW students studying the following languages and their respective regions:

-Arabic -Bangla -Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian -Bulgarian -Burmese -Canadian First Nations -Chinese -Czech -Danish -Estonian -Filipino/Tagalog -Finnish -French -German -Hebrew -Hindi -Indonesian/Malay -Italian -Japanese -Kazakh -Khmer -Korean -Latvian -Lithuanian -Norwegian -Persian -Polish -Portuguese -Russian -Slovenian -Spanish -Swahili -Swedish -Tajik -Thai -Turkish -Uighur -Urdu -Uzbek -Vietnamese

Academic year fellows must take 3 credits in the language of the award and 3 credits of area or international studies each quarter.  Summer fellows must enroll in intensive language programs which are a minimum of 6 consecutive weeks.  The FLAS Fellowship is available to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
